Home of Colorado’s Original FREE Beer
Back in 2008, developers finally transformed North Nevada Ave in Colorado Springs from a questionable neighborhood of pseudo-industrial buildings and seedy bars into a thriving master-planned shopping center anchored by the Springs’ first Costco, Lowe’s, and a gorgeous Starbucks. In the years since, Trader Joe’s located their only store in Southern Colorado at University Village and a host of excellent restaurants and other shopping sprang up.
This is where Locals Barbershop & Salon launched their flagship store, located in just 1500 square feet between Smashburger and Panera Bread and right across the street from University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (UCCS). After winning a host of awards from the CS Independent, Locals was bursting at the seams in 2017 and Interstate Battery was vacating their unit next door. A couple of months worth of construction later and the combined space is twice as big with a beautiful horseshoe bar in the center, serving free beer, wine, pour-over coffee, and hot chocolate with every Locals Cut.
As one of the biggest and best barbershops in Colorado Springs, Locals Barbershop & Salon switched from the typical a la carte offerings of other chains to an all-inclusive service model where one price covers everything. As of the writing of this article, $45 covered a men’s cut, the shampoo & conditioner, scented hot towel service, a straight razor neck shave, and the free drink. They will even style it up, trim eyebrows, and give you product recommendations for free if you ask nicely. What a deal! Women’s hair, or long men’s hair, was a little more expensive at $55 but that includes shampoo, conditioner, and a round brush blow dry style. Compared to most salons these days that’s a steal.
The beer at Locals Barbershop has always been a local microbrew of one brand or another but for the past few years has just rotated through a nice lineup of Goat Patch Brewing’s standard and seasonal offerings. With three taps behind the bar, there is plenty to choose from. Don’t be picky, it comes with the cut, though you can buy an extra beer for yourself or your companion for just $4.00. That’s ridiculous. We’re surprised more of the neighbors don’t just hang out for the beer as that’s the cheapest we’ve ever seen a microbrew.
For those adults that aren’t into beer, Locals Barbershop & Salon provides wine (red or white are the options), bottled water, or an excellent freshly ground pour-over coffee. Plenty of options considering this is just a barbershop and hair salon!
Kids aren’t left out either as the free beer can be given to the parent when booking an appointment for the kids! Locals also has hot chocolate and bottled water as nonalcoholic options in addition to the pour-over coffee. They haven’t upgraded to a full espresso service and currently only offer cream and sugar as options for the coffee.
